What Anxiety Does to Your Body

We know the mind and body is connected. The physical effects of worrying are so strong that they can be noticeably felt because anxiety is a physical reaction to stress, as well as psychological.

If you’ve gotten so used to feeling anxious that those physical feelings are normal, your anxiety is interfering far too much with the quality of your life.

As neurotransmitters carry the impulse to the sympathetic nervous system, heart and breathing rates increase, muscles tense, and blood flow is diverted from the abdominal organs to the brain. In the short term, anxiety prepares us to confront a crisis by putting the body on alert. When there’s no immediate threat, these symptoms are counterproductive: lightheadedness, nausea, diarrhea, and frequent urination.

When it persists for an ongoing basis, anxiety can take a toll on our mental and physical health.

Long-term illnesses that arise from anxiety can be digestive disorders and gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic migraines and frequent viral infections due to a weakened immune system.
